Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is progressive. Most of us would like to think that the road from “sure I’ll try it” to “I need to keep doing it” is long and winding. Unfortunately, not all drug addictions develop slowly. Physically speaking, the nature of drug addiction is fairly straightforward. Emotionally, however, drug addition is the murkiest of waters. What causes drug addiction? How does drug addiction work? More importantly, is there a drug treatment center that can help a person overcome the disease of addiction?
There are good drug and alcohol treatment centers located in Delray Beach, Florida. Drug and alcohol treatment centers have a long history of treating drug addiction and alcoholism and their staff really understand that each client’s rehabilitation needs are unique. The drug rehab experts emphasize that in order for a person to successfully overcome their drug addiction they need to understand how it works- how the body and the emotions surrounding a person’s drug addiction function. Understanding these things will help each person develop a treatment for drug addiction or alcoholism that works.
Let’s talk about the physiology of drug addiction. Remember that physically, each drug does different things. A person will have a different physical reaction to a meth addiction than he or she will have with a heroin or alcohol addiction. Two basic types of drugs are the drugs that help calm you down and the drugs that help give you energy. When you take these drugs, the chemicals contained within the drugs replace the substances that your brain would produce naturally when it felt that those substances were needed. Over time, as drug addicts take more and more of their drugs of choice, the brain stops producing those substances naturally and the body becomes dependent up on the drug for the substance’s creation.
The reason alcohol and drug addiction is such an emotional issue is that the chemical drugs replace are responsible for the balancing of a person’s moods. A person’s moods can become unbalanced for any number of reasons. Perhaps a person had problems growing up that led to the development of severe anger or depression issues. Maybe another person does not function well under stress but, for whatever reason, has been forced to live in stressful conditions. Often, drug addiction arises as a coping mechanism-a way of dealing with the every day things that others don’t seem to have a problem dealing with. It is common for a drug addiction to arise from an “I just need a little [insert emotion] and I’ll be okay” and the only way the drug addict is able to create that emotion is through the consumption of a drug. The number of drug addictions that began as a one time “quick fix” is staggering.
Drug and alcohol centers understand that sometimes an addiction can happen by accident and that the only way to overcome an alcohol addiction or drug addiction is to figure out why someone first began consuming his or her drug of choice. Once a person is able to get to the root of the emotional side of his or her drug addiction, he or she can take great strides to ensure that their drug and alcohol treatment is a success. The drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs focus on the process of overcoming addiction and work to give their clients the tools to stay sober, once their drug addiction and alcohol rehabilitation is complete.
