What goes on inside an alcohol treatment center?

Over the past several years, alcoholism has emerged as a huge cause of concern for millions of people throughout the world. In underdeveloped countries of Asia and Africa, alcoholism is mostly associated with physical violence and domestic abuse which has been predominant for several centuries now. In the United States of America, however, the problem has been marked differently. Alcoholism as an addiction is not restricted to a particular sex, community or age group. It can surface at anytime and in anybody. In fact, a growing number of teenagers and those in their 20s have been found to be worst affected by this form of addiction.

Like any other addiction, alcoholism has its roots in an unhealthy lifestyle, depressed mental state and anxieties. With more and more people losing their jobs, getting trapped in credit tangles and other financial problems, alcoholism is fast turning out to be a major problem. To prevent this problem at an early stage many people are seen going for treatment at various alcohol rehabilitation centers that have mushroomed in large numbers over the past few years. Significantly, these rehabilitation centers have managed to retain an impressive track record with several millions of addicts showing fast recovery.

For someone who has little or no knowledge about the rehabilitation center it would be interesting to learn what exactly happens in an alcohol treatment center. First of all, there is a pressing need to shatter a few myths about these centers which have become susceptible to a lot of misconceptions and false impressions. To begin with, the centers are not prisons or confined cells where alcoholics are treated as prisoners. This has often resulted in the infamy of such rehabilitation centers and many alcoholics have shied away from getting admitted to an alcohol rehabilitation center.

Typically speaking, an alcohol treatment center makes use of multiple procedures of healing and medication to help the addicts get rid of their ill habit. In the first phase, a recovering alcoholic is made to go through the procedure of detoxification which helps the person to detoxify from alcohol completely. It must be mentioned that the detoxification procedure has variations and is determined by an expert physician. In simple terms, the detoxification process differs from person to person. For this, the alcoholic is properly examined by a team of expert physician. On the basis of this evaluation, the doctors come up with a detox plan which consists of medication as well as meditation.

Apart from prescribing the necessary medication and other important steps, doctors at these treatment centers also focus on educating the patients and spreading awareness about the need to get rid of alcoholism. They are provided education on the ill effects of alcohol consumption and the various ways to curb the urge to take alcohol during moments of anxiety and stress. It is also emphasized that alcohol is not the only solution to get stress free and enjoy a relaxed life. However, the education is imparted in the most casual and informal manner to make sure that the lessons are not simply drilled inside the mind of the patient. Instead the education is instructed in simple tête-à-tête format wherein the patients are told to share their experiences and alcohol related problems with fellow patients and physicians.

Instead of putting the alcoholic through a rigorous medication therapy, a reliable alcohol rehabilitation center maintains individual therapies for each patient. This is done to enhance immunity and build resistance power to avoid alcohol in any form and amount.

An important aspect of such rehabilitation centers is the adoption of the group therapy which has proven to be the most effective medium of medication for alcoholics of all age groups. As the name suggests, in this form of medication the patients are not treated merely as individuals but as group of people struggling to deal with their alcohol problems. In this kind of medication, the patients are classified in small groups of 5 to 10 people. A skilled physician and doctor convene these sessions in which the patients share their experiences and alcohol related problems. This helps each patient to understand the state that alcoholism can lead to if not controlled at an early stage.

The most important medication therapy however is the relapse prevention therapy which is singularly important for all alcoholics struggling with their heavy dependence on the substance. It is often seen that even after successfully avoiding alcohol for a few weeks or even months, alcoholics revert to their drinking habits soon after. This is because during the time they deprive themselves of the substance, their urge for the drink also increases manifold. This causes failure of all efforts taken to control the addiction. To ensure that this does not happen, many reputable alcohol rehabilitation centers impart education on ways to prevent relapses. For this, the centers ask their patients to continue with the prescribed therapy and remain in touch with the center even after the medication is complete.

Transformations has an Alumni department. They call me every few weeks and stay in touch. It keeps me accountable and also lets me know someone cares.
