The Causes and Effects of Alcohol Addiction

Many people wonder how the cycle of alcoholism or an addiction to alcohol begins, how does it develop and what are the underlying causes.  There are no cut and dry answers, which is why people who find themselves in the toxic cycle of drinking to excess, contact professional treatment centers for help.  The disease rages out of control and anyone can be a victim; even those who believe they are stronger than the alcohol are taken by surprise when alcoholism happens to them.

A person does not become alcohol dependent by only drinking on occasion, but it can take a period of months or years before someone goes from social drinking to full-blown alcoholism and drinks for the way it makes them feel.  The fuel that makes a person have an alcohol addiction is drinking for the effect and a person reaches for alcohol to get rid of tension, stress, anxiety, trauma or pain.  A person drinks in order to experience a release and because it makes them feel good.  The body becomes accustomed to alcohol and a tolerance develops, and once this happens more alcohol needs to  be consumed to get the same initial affects.

When a person continues drinking alcohol regularly and eventually with chronic alcohol abuse, a person will experience blackouts.  A blackout results when someone passes out and forgets what they are doing and have done while intoxicated.  It may be frightening at first but the alcoholic will become accustomed to the situation and disregard it with indifference.  Serious problems occur from heavy alcohol use and a person can experience physical illness, social and employment problems, financial and family issues.

Over time and without professional alcohol treatment, an alcohol addiction results in causing a person withdrawal symptoms if a person does not consume enough alcohol.  Symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include sweating, hallucinations, tremors, nausea, vomiting, disrupted sleeping patterns and more.  Losing control is something that often happens when someone is addicted to alcohol, and it becomes more and more difficult to resist alcohol as the disease progresses.

It can be hard for someone to understand the hallmark signs of alcohol addiction which can be determined after the following considerations, such as:

  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Tolerance
  • Psychological dependence
  • Inability to control the urges and cravings to drink
  • Using alcohol to avoid experiencing withdrawal symptoms
  • Using alcohol despite negative experiences and consequences
  • Use of alcohol with greater frequency and in larger amounts

When someone enters a professional alcohol treatment center, the first thing that is discovered is the severity of alcohol addiction.  When in treatment for alcoholism, a person is provided with educational and awareness information which shows just how truly dangerous and devastating an addiction to alcohol can be.  With proper treatment and adequate time, the good news is that alcoholism can be treated and a person can recover and heal from the situation.  It is important to permanently beat alcoholism that a person receives compassionate care, unwavering support and learns how to turn away from alcohol and embrace a happier, sober lifestyle.
