Debunking The Myths That Surround Alcoholism

Many people have misconceptions when it comes to the truth about alcohol abuse. As there are millions of people who are affected by alcoholism in America, it can be important to clear up the myths in order to fully understand the impact that an addiction can have over one’s life. This article looks more in-depth at just a few of the myths that surround alcoholism.

  • An addict has to want to overcome the alcohol dependency they have in order to achieve sobriety in a program. This has been proven to be untrue, with many people going onto become sober despite being forcefully made to enter an alcohol rehabilitation program. This is particularly true with those who had to go to a Florida treatment center because of a court injunction or a similar situation.
  • Once a person achieves sobriety during the rehabilitation process, life is simply smooth sailing from there. Some people can have the willpower to remove alcohol from their lives on a ‘cold turkey’ basis (without any support), and some others can go through a Florida treatment center rehabilitation program without looking back. However, statistically, for the most part, it is imperative that many people attend local support groups which can continue to give a person support to continue their sobriety and to resist the temptations of alcohol that a trigger can provide. A good quality treatment center will have programs set-up for after treatment. Support after successfully leaving a program is just as, if not more important for an addict to avoid relapse and remain sober.
  • If the statistics surrounding a relapse are high, what can be the point of consistently checking into a rehabilitation clinic for more treatment? Just like some people do not pass their driving test the first time, some people can find that the chances of them successfully achieving sobriety on their first attempt are slim. The factors that can help determine this can include the severity of an addiction and how much treatment the reforming alcoholic in question has achieved. For those who do not succeed the first time round, it is common for a person to receive a more intensive form of treatment (like in an inpatient treatment center). There are various things which can reduce the chance of a person experiencing a relapse, which can include having longer periods in an inpatient center. Even though some people can manage to achieve sobriety within just three to six months of support in a clinic, some people can extend their care up to twelve months in order to better their chances.
  • Alcoholics are drama queens. The amount of people who haven’t experienced a drinking problem and think like this can be exceptionally surprising. For those who have seen alcoholism or have endured it themselves, the reality is much different. Some compare the more severe cases of an alcohol dependency to losing control, with people having no power over what they do after that first drink, with an alcoholic’s chances of resisting a first drink near impossible in some cases.

There are a lot of misconceptions that need to be addressed with alcohol addiction. Once awareness begins to escalate, it could be better understood and tackled more effectively.

Alcoholism is not a choice one makes. We are born with it. If you have a loved one who can not stop drinking please get them help. It is a medical problem that needs attention just like any other disease.
