THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS THAT AN ADDICTION CAN HAVE

Regardless of whether an addict is dependent on alcohol, nicotine or an illegal substance, the psychological effects that are had on the millions of people who suffer from an addiction are relatively similar, with many people enduring various side effects and changes in who they are because of their dependency. This article aims to look at some of the most common implications that an addiction has on the human mind.

Even though there is some common ground on the side effects that addictive drugs have, it is always worth noticing that no two addicts will endure the same side effects as there is no ‘one size fits all’ way of defining how an addiction can affect a person psychologically. This is due to the fact that everyone is an individual in their physical build, who they are, the drugs they are addicted to in the first instance, the length of time they have been taking the drugs and the strength of the drugs in question. Obviously, a person who takes drugs more frequently is likelier to have withdrawal symptoms on a more frequented basis, resultantly experiencing more psychological effects than someone who takes drugs recreationally.

People who are trying to overcome an addiction in a Florida rehab are usually quite short and abrupt during their times when they are detoxifying their bloodstream of the substance that they were addicted to. Inpatient treatment schemes that are offered by a local Florida rehab center can be highly beneficial as it can mean that an addict’s family and friends do not have to see them when they are enduring mood swings and changes in personality. In addition, many addicts can be seen to be vulnerable during these times as they can have incredibly low self-esteem and low self-worth.

A person’s mental health can be adversely affected by a drug addiction, with some people experiencing brain damage should they be using drugs for a prolonged amount of time. It has been scientifically proven that a person’s thought processes and general brain structure can change significantly over time should drugs be used consistently – and this can go for any type of addiction, whether it be to drugs, gambling or otherwise.

There have been some people who have endured extreme changes psychologically because of their drug addiction. There have been some experts who have also detected that the fundamental area where people go onto crave their addictions is in the frontal lobe of the brain, the anterior cingulated cortex to be precise. There are hopes that in the future, rehabilitation clinics could be at the forefront of therapies which try to focus on this area of the mind, developing certain aspects of how the brain functions in order for a person to be able to overcome the addiction that they may have. It can seem like a long way off, but aiming to treat people psychologically is a possibility which could be coming to people soon and an opportunity which could address the issues that people have, regardless of the type of addiction they suffer from.
