Drug and Alcohol Centers
History gives us so many examples of people who lost their lives to alcohol and drugs. There are poets and writers who were snatched away from the face of earth, leaving many stories unwritten, many poems incomplete and many works of art unexplored. There were actors who never got to act in the greatest film of their lifetimes; there were entrepreneurs who could not see the success of their endeavors. Their lives were cut short by a vice called addiction. Christian rehab centers and other rehabs work hard towards keeping such people de-addicted.
Addiction can be due to many substances. It can occur at any point in life. The scariest fact is that the addict does not understand and can hardly accept that he/she is an addict.
The Controlled Substances Act has divided the number of substances into five schedules. The listing runs into pages. This is just an indication of how many drugs and other substances can prove harmful to the human body. Overdose and continued use of these lead to addiction.
In many cases, it is found that people are tempted to take more of a drug because they want to relive the high they felt the first time they used it. Thought this may never be attained again, they keep trying, only to end up spoiling their lives. In unfortunate cases, drug addiction can even be fatal. Examples of such cases are too many to list.
Thus, it is not surprising that you see the advertisements of many de-addiction centers in the newspapers and there are indeed many drug treatment centers springing up all over the country. However, in all likelihood, making a choice would be difficult. If you are jumping into conclusions about the kind of treatment such centers give, take a minute to analyze what’s on offer. Such centers do not believe in preaching and condemning what you did so that you feel miserable and guilty at your behavior. The primary question would be how the Christian rehab facilities are different from the traditional ones. They are basically different in the mode of treatment. Residential facilities are usually preferred because they help in keeping the patient away from resources of banned substances. The mind of an addict, even in the recovery phase, is highly vulnerable to relapse and temptation. Keeping them away from all means of acquiring the substances which make them weak requires residential facilities.
Christ’s teachings are propounded in the faith-based facilities. However, they are not meant to intimidate people of other faiths. More than preaching Christianity, the virtue of religion and the supremacy of a God over men are stressed. This helps in people turning to God to understand their purpose in life and relief when wounded in spirit.
People turn to drugs for many reasons. However, once they are addicts, the society fails to view them with sympathy or kindness. Many patients are more hurt because they are helpless. They know the substance is harming them but they are unable to keep away from it. They find no comfort in family or friends, many of whom shun them. However, the presence of loved ones urges them to get admitted to a drug treatment program and also helps them to think of life after treatment.
The faith-based centers thus actively involve family members of patients so that they also understand that faith in God and Christ’s teaching require them to constantly pray and support their brothers and sisters.
These centers help in establishing the patient’s life after he leaves cured and encourages him to openly speak about what he has gone through so that many others find guidance in his words. They also try and encourage people to work with them and devote some time to their activities. Christian centers are open to people of all faiths and from all walks of life.
