Alcohol Addiction is a Widespread Problem

For many people, alcohol is a pleasant addition to a social activity or is used as a source of enjoyment when accompanying a festive celebration or a good meal.  Moderate alcohol consumption while not harmful for most adults, can lead some to developing problems with alcoholism if more than casual amounts are consumed.

A substantial number of people can consume alcohol and know how to limit consumption to harmless levels, while others cannot turn away from the desire, cravings and urge to drink.  Nearly 15 million people in the United States have problems with alcohol abuse or could be classified as an alcoholic, which means the problem is real and widespread.

Countless numbers of people engage in what can be qualified as risky drinking behavior, which could lead to further alcohol-related problems.  Additionally, 53% of men and women in America report at least one close relative who has problems with alcohol, chronic alcoholism and needs professional help.  The situation is grim and the results of alcoholism are far-reaching and very dangerous to the alcoholic, as well as those who love them.

The consequences of alcohol abuse and misuse are serious in most cases and a person who cannot stop drinking alone is putting themselves and others at risk for bad things to happen.  Heavy and prolonged drinking can result in a person experiencing health complications such as certain types of cancer, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney damage, stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal issues and much more.  Alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction during pregnancy is especially tragic and can result in irreparable harm to the developing fetus.

Drinking alcohol to the point of intoxication can result in an increased risk of death from automobile crashes, recreational accidents and job-related accidents.  Alcohol use is a rampant problem that costs untold amounts of money for people, society and employers each year.  Alcohol addiction is a serious problem which requires professional assistance because most people are unable to stop drinking alcohol alone.

It can be hard to tell if someone you love has a genuine problem with alcohol, though there are signs and symptoms which can be a hallmark of a real problem.  There are questions a person can ask and things that will be witnessed which can show whether or not a person has a genuine issue that would benefit from professional treatment.

Acknowledging the need for help with alcoholism is a decision that one can only make after much thought and personal reflection.  When a person experiences the negative consequences of chronic alcoholism and does not know where to turn, a professional alcohol treatment center can be the best place to turn for help.

With counseling, therapy and other healing modalities, the caring, compassionate staff of a professional alcohol treatment center is ready, willing and able to help even in the most severe cases of alcoholism.  Someone does not have to face the situation alone, asking for help is the best way to break the cycle of alcoholism and embrace a healthier, happier, sober lifestyle and permanently leave the darkness of alcohol in the past.
