A proper alcoholism treatment includes controlling the physical and mental symptoms of the addict that arises due to discontinuing alcohol. These symptoms are known as withdrawal symptoms and sometimes they may be severe. Hence it is advised that whenever a patient undergoes detoxification he/she should be under the supervision of skilled people in a treatment center. The treatment for such an addiction generally includes medication as well as counseling.

Social support and more importantly compassion from the family plays a major role in controlling alcohol addiction in a person. In the case of alcohol use, there are high chances that a person returns to addiction because alcohol is more readily available. Hence it is necessary that the treatment should be so all encompassing that the addict is able to control himself. Moreover it is also necessary that an addict has the adequate determination to say no alcohol. Unless the addict has desire on his/her part it is not possible to come out of any addiction.
