THE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY AND HOW FLORIDA ALCOHOL REHAB COULD HELP

It’s a well-known fact that alcohol during pregnancy is harmful – for the mother and the developing baby. What isn’t as clear are the reasons for this being the harsh but true reality. In this article, we look at how alcohol enters an unborn child’s system, the problems that it can cause, and the impact it has on the child throughout the rest of their life.

Consuming alcohol excessively at any stage in one’s life is harmful, and if an individual develops an addiction to the widely used recreational substance, they may require treatment in a center such as the Florida alcohol rehab. However, drinking alcohol in practically any quantity while pregnant is always warned against. This is mainly due to the damage it can inflict on both the mother and the fetus.

Think of it this way: when the mother has a drink, so does her developing child. It sounds bazaar, but it is actually a fair summary of what happens. The reason for this is that alcohol travels quickly and easily from the bloodstream of the mother, through the placenta and into the blood of the fetus – causing a number of concerns.

One of the main problems that it can cause here is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), which can affect the child in a number of potentially life-threatening ways. On a physical level, the baby’s face and body may be deformed, and their development may be halted if they survive to be born. The child is likely to have a low birth weight due to being born prematurely, which increases their susceptibility to dying within the first few weeks of life.

Miscarriages are common amongst pregnant drinkers, but even if a child manages to live, he or she will have to live with the scars of their mother’s drink abuse for the rest of their life. This is why the Florida alcohol rehab offers help, guidance and support to pregnant mothers – especially those with a history of alcohol abuse. Rather than saving one life that is in jeopardy, they are, in effect, saving two.

Mentally, the child may suffer from  a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning that their cognitive ability is limited and that they may find things such as communication and learning difficult. The effect of alcohol on the central nervous system (CNS) of the fetus can be drastic, too, and they may be paralyzed or unable to walk in the usual way.

Although these horrific effects will not characterize themselves in every case of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, the consequences are too big to be worth taking a risk over. It really is better to be safe than sorry.

If you know someone who has or is experiencing an alcohol-related problem whilst pregnant, or indeed any other form of alcohol concern – get in touch with the Florida alcohol rehab today. The professionally qualified staff team are ready and waiting to offer their expertise to give medical support and assistance, with the key intention of saving the lives of both mother and child.
