Reasons for the Rising Number of Female Patients Admitted in the Alcohol Treatment Center
In the early 20th century, alcoholism was largely perceived as a problem that affected men of the lower strata of the society. With passing time, this trend became a universal problem and people in almost every society started associating alcoholism with dingy environment and lack of formal education. However, in the 21st century, we have become aware of the fact that alcoholism is not restricted to any particular class, gender or culture. It is a serious problem that is affecting the well being of our society. Given this scenario, it has become extremely important to find solutions for this problem. The solution has to be far reaching and long lasting to be effective. One of the probable solutions for this social problem has turned out to be the alcohol rehab centers that are doing a commendable job in alleviating alcoholism from the society.
The alcohol rehab centers have a history of helping people with an alcohol problem get rid of their ill habit. These centers are also extremely effective in making sure that the patient does not relapse after getting treated at the center. Yet, there are a number of bizarre and challenging cases that require these centers to adopt newer means of medication. For example, the number of female patients has been on a steady rise in the past few years. While it is true that alcoholism is not limited to any gender, it is still an alarming trend considering that there are quite a few middle aged women who have turned to these centers for some help.
One could ask what makes these women susceptible to alcoholism or any other kind of addiction problem. There are no specific answers to this, yet some of the reasons that come to mind are as follows:
- Emotional breakdowns
Research now proves that women are indeed more emotional than men. They respond emotionally to a problem facing them and often find it extremely difficult to get out of a negative mental frame. Alcoholism or the other addiction problems surface in people going through a difficult phase in life. In women, an emotional break down has severe repercussions. They may have a tough time dealing with it. Therefore, they tend to take support from alcohol to fill the vacuum that they experience when alone. By the time they realize that they need to get rid of their alcohol problem, they find themselves caught in the middle of a huge issue. At this stage, most alcoholic women turn to the alcohol rehab centers where experts treat them.
- Loneliness
Things have changed drastically since the last century or so. The concept of family life has undergone a sea of changes with people leading an uncertain and often an isolated life. With break ups, divorces and separations on the rise, women are having some serious problems in their relationships. They are making up for the loneliness in their lives by boozing heavily. This is yet another example of how emotionally fragile the fairer sex is.
- Access to quick money
Women who indulge in social drinking with friends know where to draw the line. However, when alcoholism gets into their lives, limits are often pushed to the extreme levels. This is one of the reasons why alcoholic women often find themselves on the wrong side of the law. They break traffic rules and endanger their lives to a great extent. Despite these negative consequences, women are turning into alcoholics in almost every part of the United States of America. The reason behind this trend is the availability of quick cash. Women are earning well, have nobody to take care of and boozing is not a taboo in a progressive society like the USA. All this is ensuring that women continue to fall into the trap of alcoholism and seek help from some alcohol rehab center.
The growing trend of women becoming alcoholics is evident from the fact that nearly every alcohol treatment center in the US now reports to have an equal proportion of male and female patients. In fact, some of these centers are even hiring female doctors and physicians to attend to the needs of the female patients. Psychologists working at these centers feel that women now run the risk of turning into alcoholics for the rest of their lives. They also fear that unless these women get medical and professional help, it might become nearly impossible for them to return to normalcy.
As seen earlier, an alcoholic’s family can play a huge role in the treatment procedure. Friends and family members of the alcoholic may get in touch with an alcohol treatment center and seek medical help. In fact, they can support the alcohol treatment center by reaching out to it before the case becomes more complex. An immediate action can prevent problems at a later stage.
