Importance of Group Counseling in Treatment Provided at an Alcohol Treatment Center
The reason why millions of alcoholics are turning to alcohol rehabs is because people are gradually realizing that neglecting this problem may have serious repercussions. These repercussions may include both physical ailments and psychological problems at a later stage. More importantly, this problem is not merely a personal problem. It is instead a social problem that needs to be alleviated for the betterment of the society. Therefore, it is extremely important to seek professional help before it is too late. This professional help can be availed by going for treatment at any professional alcohol treatment center.
The alcohol rehab centers are meant to extend assistance to alcoholics trying to come out clean. Run by charitable and non profit organizations, these alcohol rehab centers are known for providing state of the art facilities to all kinds of patients. Interestingly, the treatment facilities are not restricted to just one specific kind. Instead, patients are treated in a holistic manner. These efforts prove beneficial in catering to the individual needs of alcohol abusers of all kinds admitted at these centers. One of the most critical aspects of these centers is group counseling. Developed with the objective of making the addicts comfortable in their new surrounding, these group sessions have become quite popular among recovering addicts admitted at these rehab centers.
Typically, these group counseling sessions involve groups of 4 to 5 members. These group members participate in the counseling session which is moderated by a psychologist or a counselor. In these sessions, the patients share their experiences and the problems that they had to face because of their addiction problem. By sharing these problems with one another, the recovering addicts find it easier to come out of their inhibitions and depression. They hear like minded people sharing anecdotes of their experiences with alcohol. These interactive sessions therefore create a sense of solidarity between the recovering addicts admitted at the center.
Psychologists and counselors moderating such sessions say that group counseling breaks the ice between the addict and his doctor. The psychologists identify the problem faced by the recovering addict. This, in turn, helps the psychologists to adopt the appropriate treatment procedure. As far as the patient is concerned, these sessions help him to come out of his problem and see the damage that alcoholism does to a person. On many occasions, it has been found that these sessions end with a lot of heartwarming experiences. Many patients break down while narrating the problems they have faced because of their addiction. However, according to the psychologists working at these rehab centers these weak moments are essential to bring about a positive change in the recovering addicts. Unless, they start realizing the harm that alcoholism has caused in them, it will remain impossible for the medical staff to attend to the needs of the patients.
Some of these group counseling sessions also involve ex addicts who may have recovered from the same alcohol treatment center. The purpose is to throw light on the challenges that these addicts face while getting treated at the rehab center. The ex addicts participate in these group counseling sessions to help the recovering addicts. They share their experiences and the life that they are leading after getting treated at the alcohol treatment center. These interactive sessions involving the ex addicts are extremely useful as the recovering addicts build some self confidence and start believing in their inner abilities to come out clean. Psychologists working at the alcohol rehab centers also say that active participation from ex addicts help them to deal with the recovering addicts. These sessions relax the body and mind and instill in the minds of the recovering addicts a sense of determination.
Owing to the popularity of the group counseling sessions, a number of alcohol rehab centers are making special arrangements to organize these sessions on a large scale. These centers are collaborating with one another to arrange special counseling sessions with eminent guests. In the faith based alcohol rehab centers, these group sessions are generally convened by pastors and religious preachers. In these sessions, the speakers focus on the essential tenets of Christianity. They also speak on ways in which alcoholism and all other forms of evils can be conquered through a Christian way of living. The sessions are also held at large gatherings and distinguished speakers address these gatherings.
Some of these group counseling sessions also involve participation of recovering addicts in group activities. These simple group activities are developed to help the addicts in the most effective manner. Some of these activities may include creative writing, meditation or any other creative exercise. The idea is to keep the body relaxed and help the addicts to concentrate on the positive energies around them. These factors have made group counseling immensely popular among recovering addicts of all kinds.
