The Benefits of an Addiction Interventionist

Why should you use an Interventionist?

Most individuals who abuse drugs and alcohol do not believe or accept that they have a problem. They do not understand the severity of the situation and therefore the question of treatment does not arise. If your loved one has fallen in to the deadly trap of substance abuse, then the responsibility lies on you to convince them that they need the professional help of a Rehab Program

Just by telling the person that you care and are concerned about their well being is not likely to change things.  More often than not your sharing your concerns will not have any effect on the behavior of the addict. However, if the family members handle the addict tactfully, they might succeed in helping the addict come to a conclusion that they must address their addiction. The willingness to attend treatment is the most important aspect. However, unfortunate, the family and loved ones rarely succeed in persuading the person to seek treatment.

In some cases, initially it is the family and friends of the addict who intervene and influence the thought process of the addict so that they will agree to go for treatment. Often the addict does not follow through after agreeing.  When the family intervention fails to convince the addict to enroll in a treatment program or when the person is in total denial and unwilling to even discuss or listen to everyone’s concerns, then a professional Interventionists must be contacted.

Experts believe that most of the addicts who flash the ‘I can handle this on my own’ attitude and are reluctant to even talk about their problem are actually pretty vulnerable. In fact, many of them are suffering and looking for a way out, but their fears or pride block them from making a change.  The addiction makes it harder for them to see things clearly, they have poor coping skills and problem solving is far beyond their reach. They often honestly believe that their problems are due to external issues, job stress, relationship issues, and financial responsibilities. Which is often just the opposite and if they were to stop abusing substances some of these issues could be resolved, and many times these issues in fact are a direct result of their addiction. It is a vicious cycle, as the problems increase in the addict’s life they use more alcohol and or drugs to escape which in turn causes more problems.  It is in such scenarios, that is when an Interventionists specialized training  is invaluable.

What is it that an Interventionist does?

We provide professional help to addicts and educate them about the hazardous affects of addiction and why they need to take action. Your intention and motives have always been pure, but you are probably not well equipped to help the addict. You probably need the assistance of a qualified Interventionist.

Our Interventionist will work together with you and other family members to plan the best approach for your loved one. This is achieved by preparing a complete sketch of the life cycle and history of the client. The interventionist would first try and explore the underlying reasons as to why the person may have turned to drugs and alcohol. The Interventionist will then develop a plan according to this information, and do a comprehensive assessment of the severity of the dependency. Each and every addict is different and must be handled in a way that will be most effective. Some addicts are passive or withdrawn, others are aggressive and can be violent, some are suffering with serious health issues, mental health diagnoses, past history of sexual abuse, gender specific issues, and this list goes on and on.

It is important that the family and loved ones provide as much information as possible so that the Interventionist can approach the addict in the most effective manner. Interventionists need to use various methods, some will play the part of an Authoritarian, others will act as a confidant, and others just present the facts. However the Interventionist chooses to control the actual Intervention is based on proven methods they have used over and over and been the most successful. For example, if the addict has reached an advanced stage of addiction, the interventionist will make adjustments to his strategy. This is where friends and family play an extremely pivotal role. They need to first help our Interventionist in informing about previous attempts at treatment whether successful for a period of time or un-successful. The family and friends often hold a wealth of information even when they don’t realize it.

The Interventionist is highly trained on asking the right questions and gathering the information that will make the Intervention and subsequent Treatment Plan the most successful. It is important that the family and loved ones feel comfortable with the Interventionist; their priority is your loved ones safety and recovery process.

The Interventionist educates the family and support system of the Addict

An Important role of the Interventionist is to educate and inform the group about what not to do. Interventionists understand that it is a built in emotion to stick up for your loved one when you see them in discomfort. However sometimes it is this very discomfort that may motivate the addict to change. It is not the goal of the Interventionist to badger or embarrass the addict or the family. The goal of the Interventionist is to provide a balance, a safe place in which the family and friends can voice their concerns. The Interventionist will instruct the group to not only focus on the bad behaviors of the addict but also the fond memories, before the addiction took over. The Interventionist will be stern with both the addict and family members. It is the job of the Interventionist to make the family aware of behaviors that are enabling the addict to continue their addiction.

The Interventionist may confront the issue of family financially supporting the addict so that they are not responsible, which in turn allows them to spend money on alcohol or drugs. Giving the addict a place to live, despite disrupting the lives of all around them and putting them in harms way is unacceptable and allows the addiction to continue. In most of the situations there is no room for enabling. There is no room for being the good guy. This is because, for the addict nothing makes a difference. The Interventionist points out to the family and loved ones that nothing will change until something concrete is done, there has to be consequences. The job of the Interventionist is to drive home the reality of the crisis to the addict as well as resistant family and friends. It only takes one family member to reach out for help from and Interventionist and they will guide the situation towards a healthy resolution for all involved. Our interventionists are the best way to encourage your loved one to agree to get the help they so desperately need.
